After Saturday’s deluge the track at Amman Valley was perfect on Sunday for a full card of racing including the STAGBI 3 & 4 year old British Championships.

First up was the 3 year old STAGBI British Championship, a combined race made up of 3 Fillies and 4 colts/geldings. Race favourite RHYDS DUDE was on his second race of the season, having finished third in this year’s Little Welsh Dragon. He was one of the top 2 year old colts last year, having won the Breeders Crown, York Graduate Race, Heat of the VDM and unlucky not to win the VDM. It was a comfortable win for this strong willed individual from last week’s 3yo winner at Ivington OAKWOOD TIME AGAIN (IRE). It is assumed that RHYDS DUDE will now be prepped for the 3yo Race at the VDM and the Breeders Crown later in August.

RHYDS DUDE is by See and Ski (US) out of Rose Among Thorns (US) /Western Terror). Bred by Rhyds Stud and purchased at the 2021 York Sale for £4,100 by Joby Randall. Having won nearly £20,000 already his purchased price was very reasonable. For those of you that subscribe to various breeding theories, Rhyds Dude is what Norman Hall from Pedigree Matching would describe as the much sought after ‘Double/Double’ pattern (DD), where all four lines in the dam are returned to the maternal lines of the sire and those of the grandsire.

Unfortunately there was a little too much drama in the 4yo STAGBI British Championship! This was another combined colts, geldings and fillies race with 6 runners. As the starter released them, both COALFORD EMERALD and FORAFEWPEARLSMORE broke stride, the more experienced FORAFEWPEARLSMORE regained her stride quickly, but COALFORD EMERALD took longer to settle which disturbed a few of the others and Marc Jones was quick to seize the opportunity for a run up the inside from his second line start. The field settled and as they went through the half mile, all seemed well with TOMMY SHELBY and FORAFEWPEARLSMORE the main protagonists. However, as they entered the bend COALFORD EMERALD fell, hampering LITTLE RASCAL and unseated driver Aled Davies. With a horse down on the track, the orders were to stop the race much to the misfortune of TOMMY SHELBY who looked the likely winner at the three quarter mile marker. The horses pulled up, and pleased to report that horses and drivers involved in the accident were ok but withdrawn from the re-run. A re-run was held after the final, with a reduced field of 4. The maiden WICKED led out as FORAFEWPEARLSMORE once again had a bit of a shuffle and broke stride at the start. Jamie Davies quickly collected FORAFEWPEARLSMORE, eased back into her stride and took up the lead going into the back straight. The mare settled into a stride and set for home way before the 3/4 post, her main rival TOMMY SHELBY never looked comfortable in the re-run, he finished second just ahead of FFOS COPPER DOLLAR.

FORAFEWPEARLSMORE – Forafewdollarsmore (US) x Tyssul Pearl / Hogans Heroes (US), her breeding is somewhat unremarkable but she is a gutsy consistent performer, rarely out of the placings. She has 2 previous wins at Amman Valley this season, and was also second in the STAGBI Mares Race. Owned and bred by Emrys Thomas, her win in the STAGBI British Championship gave her trainer Emma Langford and driver Jamie Davies a quick double as they also won the days Final, The Jimmy Cassidy Memorial Final with RUSH AND SEE ME (See and Ski (US) x Rush Around/ Hasty Hall).
