ARTIFICAL INSEMINATION (AI)
K1 All domestic semen used for the purpose of AI must be from stallions that are fully registered and entered in the STAGBI Studbook and hold a valid Stallion Licence.
K2 All domestic stallion owners intending to use their stallions as donors for AI purpose must notify STAGBI in advance of collection of semen.
K3 All domestic semen used for the purpose of AI must be from stallions that a DNA profile on record and be parentally verified by DNA analysis to his sire and dam.
K4 All domestic stallions donating semen should have been tested negative for Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM), Equine Infectious Anaemia (EIA) and Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA) prior to collection of semen as specified by the current HBLB Code of Practice. Confirmation of negative results should be submitted to STAGBI prior to distribution of semen. In the case of a seropositive EVA result following vaccination, evidence of negative result prior to vaccination is required.
K5 Any person wishing to import chilled or frozen semen must notify STAGBI of the intended importation, stating the stallion’s registered name and country of registration.
K6 All imported semen used for the purpose of AI must be from stallions that are fully registered and entered in their countries recognised breed authority studbook.
K7 All imported semen used for the purpose of AI must be from stallions that has a DNA profile on record and has been parentally verified by DNA analysis to his sire and dam. The DNA profile and certified unique number must be made available to STAGBI for subsequent progeny verification purposes.
K8 All semen imported into the UK from within the EU must be accompanied by a completed intra-community trade certificate (INTRA) specifying the name of the stallion whose semen the certificate relates to and by an original, valid health certificate issued in the country of origin.
K9 All semen imported into the UK from outside the EU must be accompanied by a completed Common Veterinary Entry Document (CVEDA) specifying the name of the stallion whose semen the certificate relates to and by an original, valid health certificate issued in the country of origin.
K10 All importers of frozen or chilled semen must supply STAGBI with copies of all accompanying health certificates.
K11 All transported semen must be clearly labelled with the name of stallion and the date on which semen was collected.
K12 On completion of each AI procedure the authorised veterinarian or AI technician must complete the STAGBI Certificate of AI form and return to stallion owner/agent.
K13 In accordance with recommendations of the World Trotting Association (2019):
- As of January 2020, any frozen semen already frozen and instorage, from a STAGBI registered, STAGBI licensed stallion may be used after the stallion is deceased or gelded. However, the use of frozen semen of a deceased stallion will be limited to 20 mares per year.
- Any semen frozen after January 2020 from a STAGBI registered and STAGBI licenced Stallion may be used for up to 5 years after the death of the stallion or after he is gelded and limited to 20 mares per year.
K14 STAGBI will not permit the use of frozen semen from a deceased stallion or stallion that has been gelded, that was not STAGBI registered or a STAGBI licenced Stallion. Any foal born as a result of using such semen will not be registered.
K15 STAGBI will not permit the use of imported frozen semen from a deceased or stallion that has been gelded. Any foal born as a result of using such semen will not be registered.
K14 If stored frozen semen is sold the vendor and purchaser must have a written agreement over the ownership or sale of any existing frozen semen and who is responsible for issuance of any subsequent mating certificate. A copy of the written signed agreement should be forwarded to STAGBI.
