Last weekend saw one of the Jewels in the Crown of Wales and Boarders’ Racing Season, the annual Penybont Races. According to their regular reporter ‘On Saturday all roads led to Penybont for the prestigious race meeting, the oldest in Wales which acquired its nickname of the Wembley of Wales a 100 years ago and still retains its iconic standing’.  Traditionally the Grade A Final is the premier race, however this year the Grade A was a straight race and won by (and not for the first time) 14 year old Lakeside Pan.  Lakeside Pan is owned by lifetime supporter John Elder and was driven to victory by Mathew Tromans.

Lakeside Pan is no stranger to winning, having won no less than 65 of his 204 lifetime starts, earning £13,475 in prize money and a record time of 1.59.8 taken as a 7 year old in Amman Valley.  Bred by Mrs Mair John and the late Ronnie John, Lakeside Pan started his racing career as a three year old under BHRC Rules in 2012. But he didn’t find the winners enclosure until 2013 when, as a four year old, he won his maiden at the Tregaron Spring Meeting.  He went on to win another 6 wins that season, including another 2 wins at the Tregaron Festival in August.  He started the 2014 season with another win at Tregaron, but was shortly sold and thereafter continued his racing career with the unaffiliated organisation Wales & Borders Harness Racing (W&BHR).  Lakeside Pan won another 9 races that season and followed it up the next season with another 13 wins from 27 starts.  His CV is as long as your arm and includes wins at practically every track on the Wales & Borders circuit.  With the exception of 2020 (when W&BHR did not race due to Covid), he has won races every season since 2013.  His 2023 season looks to be his most lucrative to date, with his winnings this year already higher than any other season.

Lakeside Pan was from the first crop of The One Night Pan (US) and the first foal out of Lakeside MJ, a mare that was herself imported in utero.  Both The One Night Pan and Lakeside MJ are both themselves the result of the Golden Classic Cross of Artsplace (US) and Western Hanover (US).
