Congratulations to the winner of the inaugural running of the STAGBI Queen of the Turf Final run in memory of Delwyn Thomas.

The Final was the conclusion of the new national series of races introduced by Wales & West HRA. The series comprised of 6 legs across the country, from Haugh Field in the north to Lampeter in the south with Hellifield, Almeley and Talsarn in between. Mares accumulated points in each race, and the top ten mares with the highest points were invited to the Final at W&W’s meeting at Aberystwyth on Sunday.

A full field of 10 mares faced the starter, with Blytheview Deuce leading them into the first bend, she was soon joined by James Haythornthwaite and his catch drive Wellfield Beauty. It was somewhat of a dual down the back stretch. But the paced slowed dramatically at the paddock bend and Ryan Inglis decided it wasn’t for him and switched Brywins Mybeach three wide to take up the running up the home straight. In essence, thereafter it was all over, Brywins Mybeach crused effortlessly on was on the telling ground. The duo opened up a comfortable lead which simply left the chasers just too much to do. Brave efforts from fellow Scottish entry Stashthecash and local filly Ffos B Hasty to finish second and third, along with Forafewpearlsmore who put in a big run having been hampered by her stablemate at the start.

Brywins Mybeach was bred by Brian Davies, Senybridge and is a 7 year old mare by Star On The Beach (a brother to world famous, late Somebeachsomewhere) and out of Maple Hanover. Maple Hanover was herself a great race mare and prolific winner for Brian Davies, indeed she also won on the Aberystwyth track in 2006. Brywins Mybeach is now owned by Gary Allan and trained by his son Tony Allan., she only just scrapped into the top 10, and it was a long way down from Scotland. But sometimes things are meant to be, it was her day and she fully deserves to be crowned the first STAGBI Queen of the Turf.

Congratulations to all her connections and to W&WHRA for the vision of creating the series. Let us hope that the series can be built upon with more tracks participating in the series next year.
