Congratulation to Kayleigh Tonkins and Hlltop Recon (aka Billy) who have been selected to the Welsh Endurance Team. They will travel to Ireland in August where they will represent Wales and compete against England, Ireland & Scotland

Owner Kayleigh takes up the story: Billy started life out like most standardbreds – on the track where he won some races with the unaffiliated Wales & Borders Association. Fast forward a few years to when COVID struck it meant that sadly Billy was put up for sale and his racing career came to an end. He was sold up to Shropshire where he settled into a happy life of being pampered and happy hacking. A further few years down the line Billy was once again loaded up and sold to his now forever home, returning to West Wales to start a new career in endurance!

He is currently competing in his first novice season and is already causing a bit of a stir on the endurance scene, what with his incredible stamina, ground covering gait and ability to settle after the ride to be presented to the vet for final inspection. So far he has completed in 4 x 40km Novice Graded endurance rides coming 2nd twice in the performance formula results and recently coming 1st in his class after travelling all the way to Dorset for a 42km ride.

Even more excitingly he has now been selected to be on the Wales Endurance Team where he will travel to Ireland in August to compete against England, Ireland & Scotland. This horse puts his whole heart into his work and he loves nothing more than being tacked up and ridden across the varying terrain of Wales and beyond.

All of Billy’s training and endurance rides are shared on TikTok where he has established a huge following of supporters and he’s really helping to promote the versatility of the breed

Billy or Hlltop Recon is a 12 year old gelding bred by Bill Egerton. He is by Southwest Art US and the last foal out of Wrekin Roberta (Keystone Baron US x Saunders Knight), when she was 24 years old. Wrekin Roberta was herself a successful race mare and the dam of I Am The Man, I’m Still The Man, Michelles Jackpot etc.

STAGBI would like to wish Billy and Kayleigh the very best in Ireland and look forward to hear how they get on.
